Walking Football/Wounded

The traditional Xmas Eve celebrations to mark Dave Williamson's birthday (his 66th, in case you wondered) took a bit of a left turn this year with the first ever Walking Football match, held at the Sports Centre in Banchory.

We had a full complement of 5-a-sides, albeit including a couple of slightly reluctant participants. As it transpired, one of them had good reason to be fearful - John McWhinnie took a tumble in the first few minutes, twisting his back in the process, and not long after this, he went down as if he had been shot. John's immediate reaction was that he had been kicked in the back of the leg - the classic indication of a snapped achilles tendon. It looked bad - John was on the floor for several minutes and soon the Sports Centre's First Aid team were on hand. Eventually John managed to get to his feet and, with some assistance, got back to the changing room. He urged us to carry on playing - which we did, with Steve's son, Eddie, substituting for John.

The match finished in an agreeable 12-12 draw and all - bar one - indicated that they would like to repeat the exercise on a slightly more regular basis than once a year - or was that the drink talking? Yes - it was Xmas Eve and several beers were consumed in the Legion after the match - not to mention the (very) large drams that Dave bought us all for his birthday.

Here's the team photos - first of all pre-match:

Back row - l-r: Lodge, Marshall, Williamson, Tyrie, McWhinnie, Sharp, Kilgour and Stewart.
Kneeling: Mullins and Paterson.
Then afterwards in the Legion with Dave's drams:

l-r: Sharp, Stewart, Kilgour, Marshall, Mullins, Williamson and Paterson.
I'm happy to report that John is alive and well today - in fact, it's the back injury that is now causing him more discomfort than his leg. Hopefully he'll have fully recovered soon - although I suspect we may have seen the end of his brief walking football career.

Jeb's drams

Last Friday saw our first visit for a couple of years to the most expensive (just) outlet on our Friday night drinks rota - the Tor-na-Coille Hotel. We found a nice cosy corner in the quiet lounge and settled down for the evening.

My brother-in-law, Brian Hanson, was up for the weekend and we formed the advance guard. We were joined in succession by Colin Kilgour, Nigel Meany, Ian Sharp and then a rare surprise visit from Jeb Tyrie.

The local Deeside Brewery has an exclusive on all the draught beers there, two of them cask ales:

BVFG annual golf outing

Friday 18th August was the date and Tarland the location for the 27th outing for Banchory Veterans' Football Group. It was only the second time we'd been to Tarland, the last occasion as long ago as 2004. That was also the first time the famous Filofax was awarded as the booby prize. (Prior to that the car wheel cleaning kit was awarded but that disappeared in mysterious circumstances).

Our numbers dwindled a little - from the initial 12 who had booked, there were 3 cancellations (for various reasons) so we went out in three 3-balls. As last year's winner, I was first to tee off and I was joined by Dave Williamson and the legend that is Andy Gore, who had again made the long journey up from the North of England for the occasion.

Ian Sharp led the second team, with Ken Black and Steve Paterson (in his first game of golf for 4 years). Last but not least was Team 3 led by form man Gerry Mullins, whose handicap has come crashing down to 12 this season. He was supported by Nigel Meany and Jeb Tyrie.

A multitude ot prizes - all donated by the participants - were on offer for the first 5 individual stableford scores, team (best two scores) plus two nearest the pins and the longest drive.

The portents were not good - the morning weather forecasts had all warned of violent thunderstorms for North East Scotland and it was with some trepidation that we all gathered for pre-match bacon butties. Nonetheless, it was dry when we teed off and, in the end, apart from a couple of fairly light showers we got round 18 holes OK.

Scoring, however, was modest to say the least - with one exception. Dave Willamson scored a respectable 33 points to win comfortably, thus going from last year's zero to this year's hero. Jeb Tyrie came in second with 29 points and there were four players who all finished with 26 points, necessitating some complicated calculations to sort out the order. Eventually, Ian Sharp was declared 3rd with me 4th, Ken Black 5th and Gerry Mullins 6th.

Andy Gore bagged 7th place with 23 points and it was a very close battle for the booby with Nigel Meany just pipping Steve Paterson by one point. The team prize was equally close with only one point separating the 3 teams. The first team of Dave, Andy and I came out on top after a countback.

Dave got the longest drive and Ken and Gerry (the latter slightly controversially) the nearest the pins. Afterwards we posed outside the clubhouse for the traditional team photo:

Not for the first time, I forgot to bring along the winner's shield and famous "green" jacket - and Dave also forgot the dreaded Filofax. However, I redeemed matters slightly by presenting the winner with his keepsakes later on that evening at the Headbangers' gathering at Steve Paterson's house:

There remain just 11 names on the trophy. I've won 6 times and John McDonald and Gary Grant 4 times each. Dave now joins Ian McRae with 3 wins, John McWhinnie 2, and Brian Fitzpatrick, Ian Sharp, Rob Dunnachie, Andy Gore and Geordie Ziegler once each.

We've played on 16 different courses from Brechin to Braemar. Over to Dave now to organise next year's outing - oh, and there's also the small matter of digging out the Filofax and making the presentation to Steve.

Steve's drams

Steve Paterson reports:

"Retirement drams at the Legion last Friday. Small turnout bit great to be back!"

Gary Duncan's 50th presentation

Gary Duncan was presented with his commemorative "50" shirt last week:

L to R: John Moir,  Neil McCubban,  John Macpherson,  Alan Davie,  Stephen Watson,  Gary Duncan,  Brian Manson,  Andy Robertson,  Malcolm Lodge,  Graham Pryde,  Bill Setter.  Not in shot, photographer Ewen Hay.
Gary is the 26th person to be awarded a shirt - a tradition that started with a simple t-shirt at Fred Morrison's 50th birthday match back in June, 1991. There have now been eighteen "50" shirts issued, plus five "40" shirts, six "60" shirts, one "65" shirt, one "49" shirt - and even one "30" shirt!

My records are showing those with more than one shirt - Andy Gore, Colin Kilgour, Ian Stewart, Dave Williamson, Jack Simpson and, of course, Fred himself, but this database surely needs updating as both Ian Sharp and Malcolm Lodge must also have received both "50" and "60" shirts?

The other historical database is for those who have made more than 500 appearances. I believe there are currently 14 names on the shield - in order of award:

Gore, Andrew
Stewart, Ian
Williamson, Dave
Kilgour, Colin
Simpson, Jack
Fitzpatrick, Brian
McDonald, John
Lodge, Malcolm
Sharp, Ian
Moir, John
Hay, Ewen
McRae, Ian
Tyrie, Jeb
Manson, Brian

John McWhinnie's drams

This blog is becoming a whisky advert - last night it was John McWhinnie's turn to celebrate his birthday last week with a few drams in the Burnett Arms:

Steve's drams - and Nigel's

Steve Paterson managed along to the Legion last night and we celebrated his recent birthday in the usual manner

l-r: Ian Sharp, Gerry Mullins, Ian Stewart, Colin Kilgour, Steve Paterson, John McWhinnie & Nigel Meany
No sooner had we finished these than Nigel bought some large whiskeys to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. The table was awash with glasses:

A latecomer to the party was Andy Marshall, but Steve made sure he didn't go short:

The 3 CAMRA members present took the opportunity, in the absence of the camera-shy barman,  to present another Club of the Year award to the Legion:

IRS birthday drams

There were two rakes of drams for my birthday - first at last week's Headbang at Gary's:

Bailie Nicol Jarvie it was for the connoisseurs - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bailie_Nicol_Jarvie
Then last night in the Burnett, Messrs Sharp, Kilgour, Stewart and McWhinnie had the Malt of the Month:

Celebrations!

Brian Manson's 50th birthday was celebrated in the traditional fashion at Friday night's football:

l-r: Mike Johnston, Paul Ferguson, Andy Robertson, Neil McCubban, Steve Fawcett, Alan Davie, Brian Manson, Gary Duncan, John Macpherson, Nicky Gill, Bill Setter & Malcolm Lodge

I believe Brian is the 25th player to be awarded a commemorative shirt. There are now seventeen "50" shirts in circulation, with just six "60" shirts so far.

Later on that same evening, the old boys were celebrating Colin Kilgour's 69th birthday in our own traditional way:

l-r: Ian Stewart, Dave Williamson, Jeb Tyrie, John McWhinnie, Colin Kilgour and Ian Sharp

Xmas Eve footy/Big Dave's 64th

The annual gathering of the clans went well today - footy for some, beer and drams for others. Here's the players first (with me sneaking in too):

The Burnett looked after us well too and Dave bought the Macallans again:

Have a good Christmas everyone.

Burnett drams

No real reason for buying drams in the Burnett on Friday night other than I hadn't yet bought a round and we were beer'd out, so there had to be a team photo, didn't there?:

l-r: Andy Marshall, Jeb Tyrie, Ian Stewart, John McWhinnie, Ian Sharp, Colin Kilgour and Gerry Mullins. Dave Williamson had left the building.

Jeb Tyrie joins the 500 club

Jeb became the 13th person to get his name on the 500 Shield as long ago as March, but he’s been working overseas for a while, so the photo opportunity was only last week:

l-r: Stephen Watson,  Nicky Gill,  John Moir,  Ewen Hay, Neil McCubban,,  Jeb Tyrie,  John Macpherson,  Gary Duncan,  Ian McRae,  Gary Grant,  Malcolm Lodge
Steve Fawcett was the photographer for the above one, but he and Ewen swapped roles for this one:

Annual golf outing

Last year's winner, John McWhinnie, chose to take us to a new destination for our annual golf outing - Stonehaven. Spectacular coastal views, but hard work up and down the hills and long distances between greens and tees.

The weather held for us although at times the wind was cool enough to require sweaters:

I was out first with Dave (who hadn't held a golf club for 8 years) and Jack and I took a few photos as we went round:

View from 1st tee

No - Jack didn't miss the ball - this was his practice swing

Ever patient Dave waits

Dave watches as Jack putts out at the 9th

Some of paths and tees were in precarious clifftop positions - I tried a selfie here to give an impression of this.
Individual scores on the doors were:

Stewart, Ian 36
Mullins, Gerry 34
Sharp, Ian 33
Simpson, Jack 33
Gore, Andrew 32
McWhinnie, John 32
Black, Ken 31
Lodge, Malcolm 25
Williamson, Dave 17

The second team of Sharp, Black and Gore won the team prize and Jack and I got the Nearest the Pins, with John getting the Longest Drive. Tradition dictates that last year's winner hands over the famous "green" jacket to this year's winner - and John shows his delight at doing this:

Of course, there's the shield as well:

Jeb passed his apologies for absence - working in Egypt - but he will be delighted not to be the recipient of this year's DoD award - which could potentially have been his 6th in a row. Instead Dave Williamson was the (virtual) "winner" of the dreaded Filofax. The booby prize, formerly a car wheel cleaning kit donated by Brian Fitzpatrick, was trumped when John McWhinnie donated the leather bound Filofax at Tarland in September, 2004. Since then, there have been 7 "winners" of this not-so-prestigious award:

  • Jeb Tyrie (7)
  • Brian Fitzpatrick
  • Ian McRae
  • Andy Gore
  • Steve Paterson
  • Andy Marshall
  • Dave Williamson

This was our 26th outing. The event started in 1991 at Spey Bay and the winners over the years have been:

Ian Stewart (6)
John McDonald (4)
Gary Grant (4)
Ian McRae (3)
Dave Williamson (2)
John McWhinnie (2)
Brian Fitzpatrick (1)
Ian Sharp (1)
Rob Dunnachie (1)
Andy Gore (1)
Geordie Ziegler (1)
Stonehaven was the 16th course we've played in that time.

Well organised John - a grand afternoon out - and special thanks to Andy Gore for making the effort to come up from Warcop (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warcop), near Penrith, where he now lives. He's still playing 5-a-sides too!

John McWhinnie 65

It was Friday 13th - was it unlucky for John that there were 7 of us there for his birthday drams?:

Non-mandatory drams

Gerry decided to buy the drams on Friday night - no real reason, but hey ho:

Mair drams

It was quiz night at the Legion and we had two teams entered - Stewart, Kilgour, Sharp & McWhinnie made up a full team but Mullins and Marshall had to rustle up Gerry's father-in-law Stan but still only managed a team of three, so it was inevitable that the A team Veterans easily outscored the B team - in fact, we came in 2nd overall.

After retiring to the bar, it was time for more Friday night drams, this time to celebrate the birth last week of my 5th grandson:

l-r: Ian Sharp, Andy Marshall, John McWhinnie, Ian Stewart, Colin Kilgour & Gerry Mullins
The dram of choice was Bruichladdich's The Classic Laddie, an unpeated Islay malt packaged in a far from conventional bottle:

Andy's 25th anniversary drams

Any old excuse for a Friday night dram - Andy recently had his 25th wedding anniversary so he bought the drams in the Douglas last night:
