Golf Outing

Friday was the day of this year's much delayed golf outing. We had a couple of cancellations but still mustered 9, including 2 guests and we gathered at Edzell for bacon butties pre-golf.

Conditions were fair but the sunshine in Deeside was replaced by a more cloudy Mearns country - but at least it was dry.

We played in three groups of three and gathered for high tea and prize-giving in the clubhouse afterwards. The "green" jacket and shield had finally been located after going AWOL for a couple of years, so the first task was to present them to last year's winner:

We had two individual winners on the day - my brother-in-law Brian Hanson had the best score (35 points), but as a guest, he was not eligible for the Vets shield, which went to the next best - John McWhinnie, who had 32 points, just pipping Gerry Mullins on countback. Gary made the presentation to John:

I think the jacket just became a coat!

The other winners on the day were:

  • Nearest the Pin - 6th hole - Brian Hanson
  • Longest Drive - 13th - Ian Stewart
  • Nearest the Pin - 14th - Ian Stewart
  • Team winners - Gary Grant, Ian McRae & Jeb Tyrie (76 points)
The full scores were:

Hanson, Brian 35
McWhinnie, John 32
Mullins, Gerry 32
Grant, Gary 31
McRae, Ian 31
Black, Ken 30
Stewart, Ian 28
Tyrie, Jeb 25
Thomson, Stan 23

As Stan Thomson was also a guest, Jeb got to retain the treasured Filofax - which he had forgotten to bring along anyway! It was Jeb's 5th "win" in a row and I think he's probably entitled to keep it now!

Time for a team photo:
Back row, l-r: Ken Black, Stan Thomson, Ian Stewart, John McWhinnie (with shield and jacket), Gerry Mullins & Brian Hanson
Front row: Jeb Tyrie, Gary Grant & Ian McRae
Most of us made it safely back to our homes and then gathered again at the Burnett Arms for a few more beers, but Jeb and Ian got had a slightly more adventurous time getting there. Jeb's car was very low on fuel when he left Edzell, but the computer said he had 30 miles left in his tank, which is more than the mileage to Banchory. Jeb hadn't factored the drive up Cairn o' Mount in to the equation, however. As he climbed the hill, the remaining miles on his dashboard plummeted and it approached single figures as he freewheeled downhill.

Arriving at the AA box turnoff to Feughside and Finzean, Jeb decided they weren't going to make it back to Banchory and turned left towards the Feughside Inn, where he phoned a taxi to pick him and Ian up and take them back to Banchory - leaving the clubs behind in his car.

We don't yet know what happened next. Jeb was relying on Vicki giving him a lift back to the Feughside on Saturday morning, armed with a can of petrol, to retrieve his car and eventually deliver Ian's golf clubs back to him.

A fun day out. For the record, this was our 25th outing and it was John's second win, so the Roll of honour now looks like:

5 Ian Stewart
4 John McDonald
4 Gary Grant
3 Ian McRae
2 Dave Williamson
2 John McWhinnie
1 Brian Fitzpatrick
1 Ian Sharp
1 Rob Dunnachie
1 Andy Gore
1 Geordie Ziegler
It was the second time we'd held the outing at Edzell. Over the years, we've played 15 different courses, with Braemar the most visited:

6 Braemar
3 Alford
2 Ballater
2 Kemnay
2 Edzell
1 Tarland
1 Craibstone
1 Peterculter
1 Inchmarlo
1 Forfar
1 Spey Bay
1 Aboyne
1 Lumphanan
1 Brechin
1 Auchenblae
The engraver now has to bring the shield up to date with the last 3 years, which were:

2013 June Ballater Ian McRae
2014 July Auchenblae Gary Grant
2015 September Edzell John McWhinnie
That's all, folks. Here's to next year - where and when will John propose to hold it?
