BVFG 28!

It's a very happy 28th anniversary of the formation of Banchory Veterans' Football Group today.

Often seen before, but worth repeating, here's an extract from the first page of Banchory Veterans' Football Group - A Brief History, published in January, 2000:

"It all started way back in January, 1988, (we think). Unfortunately the editor’s memory has been dulled by years of verbal abuse when he was refereeing., so he cannot be absolutely sure about the exact date.
Like all good ideas, the initial plan to start playing veterans’ football came about over a pint or two. The plot was hatched at the Tor-na-Coille Hotel after playing squash at Banchory Squash Club, the instigators being Ian Stewart, Dave Williamson and Colin Elgie.
The idea was further fuelled by more drinks at a festive party chez Simcox, with (Dr.) John Davies also joining the gang of conspirators. It was to be the Banchory Squash Club football section.
Our first booking was a bit of a disaster. Banchory Academy hall was booked for the inaugural session, one Sunday lunchtime, but, not for the last time, the school had double booked and we had to trudge homewards (possibly pubwards?) leaving the hall to the Cricket Club. Fortunately, the next session was very successful and we decided we could make it a regular fixture.
After some time, we managed to get a regular booking at the Academy, although they shunted us around a bit between Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
Eventually, the Beach Leisure Centre opened up in Aberdeen on 6/10/89., and the editor became member no.1, allowing us to make bookings one week in advance.
We got our first block booking at the Beach early in 1990, and, with the exception of one quarter, have been regulars there ever since.
By this time, a few of the early enthusiasts had dropped out of the picture, and had been replaced, largely by non squash club members, many being recruited at the Sunday afternoon Banchory Boys’ Football Club training sessions.
The interest in playing was now such that a system of selection had to be devised, and thus was born the DATABASE (all kneel!), on 1st. April, 1990."
